2012 Visit to An Grianan

In August 2012 some Westmeath Federation members visited An Grianan. Click here to see a photo of Una, Eithne and Catherine enjoying a walk through the village of Termonfeckin. The village looked lovely and An Grianan looked even more glorious. Warm weather meant the got plenty of walks in. They opted to relax for their 3 day stay. While there was a painting course taking place and a cookery demonstration, you could also sit in the sun and read your book.

The place was full with two groups taking trips to see the Titanic Exhibition in Belfast, so while it was lovely and quiet during the day there was a great buzz for the evenings entertainment.

2012 ACWW Women Walk the World Day

Una Flynn (International Officer Westmeath Federation) wrote the following about our 2012 ACWW Walk.

We held our walk on Sunday 29th April at 10 am in glorious sunshine and with the wind at our backs! Starting point: Mullingar, on the towpath on the Royal Canal out to Coolnahay, over 10kms (where we had refreshments and music and song).

We were honoured to have the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Mr. Michael Ring T.D. with us to launch our walk. Our new Westmeath Federation President, Eilis McDonnell presented the Minister with a beautiful picture of the Royal Canal (a memento of his visit). Two of our local T.D.s Nicky McFadden T.D. and Robert Troy T.D. also joined us for our walk.

Our walk was really three fold: (1) Walking with the women of the world (2) To raise awareness of the ACWW and to raise funds for clean water for Kenya (3) To remind people of the great amenity the Royal Canal is to Mullingar and to highlight our beautiful Canal walks and so encourage tourism in Westmeath.

A very big thank you to our organising Committee, our members and members of the public and in particular to Clare and Paddy, Margaret and Dick Hogan for the music and song at Coolnahay also Geraldine Kilduff and the Canal Amenity Group for their magnificient marquee and all who supported us and helped to make our walk such a memorable occasion and indeed a huge success.

2011 Craft Day hosted by Tang ICA Guild

The Craft Day was held on Saturday November 5 th 2011 in the local Primary School in Tang and it was a very successful day for all concerned. There were 5 Classes to choose from namely: Hat Making with Ann Larkin , Scarf Creations in felt with Maggie Dolan, Jewellery Making with Stacey Nielson , Floristry with Ethel Mitchell and Sugar Crafts with Miriam Castry. Each Class had its full complement of “Students”.

The day started with a welcome cup of tea and scones and so to work. I selected the Hat Making Class and I have my fascinator ready for the Kilbeggan Race Day next year! The finished creations of the other students in our class were beautiful. So Philip Tracy better look out. ! Many thanks to our wonderful and patient Tutor, Ann Larkin.

The “Students” were invited to have a walk about to all the other Classes , a great opportunity for us to get a taste of what we can learn at the next Craft Day.

I was home with three very happy students with their beautiful Scarves and flowers made with a mix of silk and cashmere in wonderful vibrant colours, and they said well done to their Tutor Maggie Dolan.

The Students at the Jewellery, Floristry and Sugar Crafts Classes were all very happy and satisfied with their day. May I take this opportunity to compliment Gill Stanley and members of Tang Guild for giving us “Students” a wonderful opportunity to learn a Craft and we also had such an enjoyable day. Their hospitality was much appreciated. Click here to see photos of the event.

2010 A Wonderful Day at the Kilbeggan Races (Click here for photos)

The Westmeath Federation ICA members along with members from all over the country joined the throngs on 15th May 2010 at Kilbeggan Racecourse to celebrate the centenary of the organisation. And in what style! The members who came were a credit to the modern, vibrant organisation that the ICA is today. The spur for this was the Best Hat competition which went down a treat.

The MC for the Reception was to be Colm Murray, but sadly he couldn’t be with us. Best wishes to Colm. Willie Geraghty and Pat Phelan did an excellent job on the day.

The day began with a cheese and wine reception in the Balcony Suite of Kilbeggan Racecourse to the background music supplied by Claire Lynam, Harpist. Superb playing and a joy to listen to.

We thank the speakers Gwen Carter, ICA Westmeath Federation President, Mary O’Rourke MP, Marian Harkin MEP, Mairead McGuinness MEP and the ICA National President Anne Marie Dennison for their lovely words of encouragement and humour about the ICA down through the years. Yes, we have come a long way and an immense amount of effort and work by the women of Ireland down through the years has brought us to where we are today.

ICA Race Winners : ICA Centenary Celebration Maiden Hurdle was the RACE OF THE DAY. Our National President Anne Marie Dennison presented the winning owner’s trophy to Catherine Murphy, who was representing the Stoneyville Syndicate.

Westmeath Federation President Gwen Carter presented D.T. Hughes, winning trainer with his prize. He also accepted a reward for the groom from Elizabeth Brady.

One of Westmeath’s oldest and longest serving ICA members Dolly Kearney from Castlepollard presented Robert Loughran, the winning jockey, with his prize.

Best Hat: The Best Hat Competition was wonderfully adjudicated by Rita Daly, Tullamore. Sponsors for the Best Hat Competition were, Westport Plaza Hotel, Cosmo Boutique and Westmeath Federation ICA.

1st Prize Monica Larenz which was presented by Una Flynn
2nd Prize Wendy Donoghue which was presented by Ginny Ryder
Bouquets were presented to the 3 runners up by Laoise Collins, Nessa Collins and Jenny Brady

Thanks to all our members who came in such style for a wonderful DAY AT THE RACES.

List of SPONSORS: Kilbeggan Racecourse, Westmeath Community Development, Westmeath County Council, Westport Plaza, Castlecourt Hotel, Mullingar Credit Union, Dubliner Cheese, Mullingar Crystal, Cosmo Boutique, Celie Whyte, Phil Brennan, James Kiernan, Maynooth, Dan Flynn, Ballycomoyle G.A.A., Belvedere House, Hotel Castlepollard, Westmeath Show Committee, Westmeath I.F.A., Ailish Davitt, Bloomfield House Hotel, Annebrook House Hotel, Shay Murtagh Ltd.

A very special word of thanks to Paddy Dunican, Manager, Kilbeggan Racecourse for his advice and assistance at all times and for putting the Racecourse at our disposal to host this very special occasion.

Evening Entertainment: That wasn’t the end of the entertainment. A number of the members adjourned to the Bloomfield House Hotel where in-house entertainment takes place each Saturday night. Late suppers were availed of and the chat continued late …

The following morning - Belvedere House, Gardens & Park: The members of the ICA who could dally late on the Sunday morning were treated to a guided tour of the fabulous Belvedere House, Gardens and Park by the General Manager Bartle D’Arcy.

I’m from the locality and have been to Belvedere House, Gardens & Park on many occasions, I was amazed at how much I learned about the place and I am still in awe at how Bartle was able to keep us all enthralled for over 2½ hours with his knowledge of the history of the house and its connections.

At the end of the tour Bartle presented the ICA National President with a Belvedere Rose, which is a pink climbing rose.

We ended the afternoon with welcome refreshments in the Courtyard Café

2010 National Competition Abbeyleix - 24th April 2010 Competitions

On 24th April, 2010 a wonderful day of entertainment took place in Abbeyleix for the national competitions. Westmeath had competitors in the Beaumann Shield and the Patsy Lawlor competitions. Tang Guild performed very well in competing for the Beaumann Shield for the first time and we look forward to hearing a lot more from them in the future.
